I am a fan of fairytale retellings, and this one did not disappoint.
The world Mary McMyne created for the woman we know as Mother Gothel was well-researched and vibrant. The story was captivating from the first chapter until the last. It was beautifully bittersweet, and I will forever see Mother Gother through new (albeit not golden nor black) eyes.
What makes this book great:
beautifully researched
strong, multi-dimensional, lead female characters
familiar, yet wonderfully new
available reading questions at the back of the book, as well as guided reading
What this book lacks:
The only reason I gave this book four stars instead of a full 5 was that I could put it down. I did, however, love picking it back up. It was a slower-paced read for me (rather than a "I-have-to-know-what-happens-next" and "I-finished-it-in-one-day" kind of read).
